Meta has announced new AI-based safety measures aimed at protecting children and teenagers on social media platforms. The company is now using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to identify underage users and provide them with safer online experiences.

AI Will Detect Real Age of Users

Many teenagers create social media accounts using fake birth dates to appear older than they actually are. To prevent this, Meta has launched AI-powered age verification and protection features.

The AI system can now analyze various signals to estimate the real age of a user. If the platform detects that a user is likely a teenager, the account may automatically be shifted to a “Teen Account” even if the user entered an age above 18 during registration.

These features will initially be available on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The goal is to reduce risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content exposure, and unsafe online interactions.

Special Safety Features for Teen Accounts

Meta says Teen Accounts will include stronger privacy and safety protections by default. These protections include:

  • Limiting messages from unknown people
  • Restricting sensitive or inappropriate content
  • Reducing screen time exposure for users under 18
  • Providing safer browsing and communication settings

The company believes these changes will help teenagers experience a healthier and more controlled digital environment.

New Tools for Parents

Meta is also improving its Family Center tools to give parents more control over their children’s online activities. Parents will now be able to monitor and manage teen account settings more effectively.

These tools are designed to help families understand digital habits and encourage safer internet usage among children.

AI Will Analyze Photos and Videos Too

The AI system will not rely only on profile information. It will also analyze user activity, including:

  • Posts
  • Captions
  • Comments
  • Messages
  • Photos and videos

In addition, Meta’s AI can study facial patterns from uploaded images and videos to estimate a user’s age more accurately.

Verification Through Government ID or AI Tools

If an account is flagged for suspicious age information, users may be asked to verify their age again. Verification can be done through:

  • Government-issued ID cards
  • AI-based verification systems
  • Facial age estimation tools

Meta stated that it will use Yoti’s facial age estimation technology for some verification processes. The company claims that newer AI systems are becoming more accurate in detecting fake age details.

Why This Update Matters

With the growing use of social media among children and teenagers, online safety has become a major concern worldwide. Meta’s AI-driven safety initiative aims to create a more secure and age-appropriate digital space for young users.

These new AI-powered protections could play an important role in reducing online risks and ensuring safer social media experiences for the next generation.
